~ THE VEDADO SERIES ~
Douglas Pérez Castro’s series Vedado reflects on the intersection of Cuban history, colonialism, and race. Born 1972 in Cienfuegos, a city with a long colonial history, Perez intersperses prominent themes of colonialism, class structures, and castes throughout his work. Perez came of age in the “Periodo Especial” marked by economic and political upheaval in the wake of failed perestroika. Against this backdrop, his work emerged from the unique ambiguity, complexity, energy, and desperation that characterized daily life in 1990s Cuba.
Vedado
(the Spanish word for “forbidden”) is an homage to a zone in Havana designated off-limits by Spanish colonists. After the Spanish-American War, Vedado underwent rapid development, transforming into one of pre-revolutionary Havana’s most affluent areas as investors and sugar barons built up mansions and hotels. Perez’s acrylic and ink on paper series is a playful send-up of the carefree, good life in Vedado — a vibrant land of irreverence, racial homogeny, and affluence.
