Fundraiser for the TREATY Total Immersion School
May 23, 2003
The TREATY Total Immersion School, a 501(c)3 tax exempt educational endowment fund, is currently under construction on the Pine Ridge Sioux Indian Reservation in Shannon County, South Dakota. The TREATY Total Immersion School-the first of its kind for American Indians in the United States-has an innovative approach to educating children, seeking to foster their American Indian culture, history and sciences through total immersion education in language and traditional teaching methodology. The first preschool class is projected to begin with 15-20 students in September 2003. A site for a community center for Lakota youth is also being designed. Funds are currently sought to complete construction, for educational grants, school supplies, and to create and sustain such an ambitious project. Documentation of the process and starup will create a transferable model suitable for other American Indian Nations.
